I was raised in Zurich, Switzerland and finished my apprenticeship in 1967. As was the custom, I went through the Army school and left for Canada a few months later, in the Spring of ’68 for what I thought would be a short term vacation. I then arrived in Vancouver, via London, New York and Montreal in May 1968. However, in some ways Vancouver is reminiscent of Switzerland and I found it such a beautiful place to live, I ended up settling here on the West Coast. As I summarize my work journey, I can tell you, that I gained a lot of valuable experience by working for several major millwork shops for 10 years, before I felt the tug to go out on my own.
Finally, the inevitable happened, as I decided it was time to venture out on my own building custom furniture. My work involved making a large variety of furniture and commercial millwork for both the private and commercial community. Such as European style kitchen nooks, custom wall units, chairs, conference tables, kitchen tables, fold down beds, desks, etc.
For several years I also had the experience of setting up my furniture displays at the Vancouver Home and Garden Show, which further expanded my work. As my list of contacts grew, I was approached by several prestigious hotels in Vancouver to do some specialty work. Some of these requests were for custom pastry carts, wine and cheese wagons, armories with built in mini bars and T.V.
In between all of my work, I met my wife Karin and we married in 1983. Shortly afterwards, our beautiful daughter Adriana was born. Towards my retirement years, I decided to go back to work for one of the largest millwork companies in B.C. Now, I am sure you will agree when I say that the years’ definitely have a way of getting by you when you are not looking!!
I am currently retired allowing me the added opportunity of making my own hours every day in the shop. I continue to take pleasure in making a variety of wooden gifts and toys which I have always found very rewarding. I also like to mix up my routine whenever possible by fitting in small projects people like to bring to me. Whether it is making a personalized blanket chest, a unique style wine rack, kitchen giftware or whatever is presented to me; every enquiry I receive is given my fullest attention. So far, I can tell you that I have never had a disappointed customer!
